What is different about Absolute Superman?

The biggest difference between Superman and Absolute Superman is that this Kal-El remembers Krypton.

Rather than being sent to Earth as an infant and raised in Smallville by Jonathan and Martha Kent, Absolute Superman grows up with his biological parents on Krypton. He witnesses the inequalities dividing his home world and becomes part of an uprising against its ruling class before the planet is destroyed. Kal-El subsequently arrives on Earth as an adult, carrying clear memories of the family, culture, and world he lost.

That history makes him more visibly alien, more politically radical, and much angrier than the traditional Superman. Yet Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval haven’t abandoned the character’s fundamental compassion. This Superman still uses his power to protect vulnerable people; he simply understands oppression firsthand and has far less patience for the institutions responsible for it.

Is Absolute Superman evil?

No, Absolute Superman is not evil. He might be angrier and more confrontational than the Superman readers know, but he remains committed to protecting people and fighting injustice.

The Absolute Universe is built around stripping DC’s heroes of their traditional advantages, not reversing their morality. This Superman has no idyllic childhood in Smallville, no Fortress of Solitude, and no established place in the world. He has to discover what being Superman means without the support system that shaped his mainline counterpart.

Who is the main villain of Absolute Superman?

The principal villain of Absolute Superman has been Ra’s al Ghul, who controls the powerful Lazarus Corporation in this universe. That choice deliberately gives Superman an enemy traditionally associated with Batman instead of immediately returning to Lex Luthor.

In fact, Aaron has said readers shouldn’t expect Absolute Lex Luthor to be a Superman foe anytime soon. The series has instead used characters such as Ra’s al Ghul, Brainiac, Brainiac’s Peacemakers, and the Lazarus Corporation to build a new mythology around Kal-El.

Will Absolute Superman get an annual?

DC has not announced an Absolute Superman Annual yet. Unlike Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman, the series has so far told its story entirely through its monthly issues. We’ll update this guide if DC adds an annual or another Absolute Superman special to the schedule.
