Shrek 5 keeps getting delayed, but that's okay: you've already waited more than 15 years for it

After more than a decade of waiting to see Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy back together on the big screen, we can all wait another six months, right?

When Shrek 5 was originally announced, there was a sense of joy among fans of the iconic animated franchise. More than 15 years after they were last in the land of Far, Far Away, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are set to reprise their roles, but fans will have to wait a little while longer to see that happen. Shrek 5 has been delayed from December 2026 to June 2027 in a reshuffle from Universal and DreamWorks Animation.

Universal hasn’t given an official reason for delaying Shrek 5 for a second time. Originally, the movie was slated for July 2026 but was moved to December 23, 2026. Turns out that date is less than a week after Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, which doesn’t feel like the ideal time to release a movie. The new Shrek 5 release date is June 30, 2027, which is almost a year after its initial release date and one week after Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse hits cinemas.

To be fair, there aren’t many release dates on the calendar that are completely clear of a superhero movie, so we can’t blame DreamWorks for taking the lesser of two evils to go up against. As part of the release date shuffle, an untitled event film from Illumination has been brought forward to April 16, 2027 from its late June 2027 release date.

We understand fans are probably disappointed that Shrek 5 has been delayed (again), but we’ve all waited more than 15 years to see Shrek return to the big screen. We can wait another six months, right? Provided it doesn’t get pushed back again, of course.
