That galaxy far, far away keeps getting bigger with the news that Lucasfilm is planning an all-new trilogy of Star Wars movies, with Simon Kinberg — the man behind Fox’s last X-Men movies — writing and producing all three.
Deadline has the news, although details are so under wraps that the outlet reports that it’s unclear whether or not Kinberg’s trilogy is the start of an all-new storyline in the franchise, or Chapters 10 through 12 of The Skywalker Saga, the primary storyline that was believed to have ended with 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Oddly, if the new trilogy does continue that storyline, it’ll be in competition with another in-the-works Star Wars movie, Sharpen Obaid-Chinoy’s New Jedi Order feature, which will reportedly feature Rey (Daisy Ridley) and pick up her story after Rise of Skywalker.
This won’t be Kinberg’s first time inside the Star Wars franchise. The writer/producer — best known for his X-Men work, having written or co-written X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix, the latter of which he also directed — was a creative consultant on 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and received a “thanks” credit for the following year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Additionally, he co-created, wrote for, and produced Star Wars Rebels, the animated series which ran from 2014 through 2018.
The addition of three new Star Wars movies to Lucasfilm’s slate signals that the studio is definitively moving away from treating Star Wars as an almost-exclusively television franchise, as it has done for the past five years with projects including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Acolyte. The next Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, is due to debut in December 2024… and, from the looks of things, may be the last original Star Wars project aimed at the small screen or streaming for some time.
Expect more on this story as it develops... but at the same time, perhaps we shouldn't expect an official confirmation or announcement ahead of next year's Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo.
