Despite rumors, Prime Video's Lord of the Rings looks set to run the full five years

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is running until season 5 as originally planned, says one source, since it is "under Bezos’ magical halo."

As someone genuinely rooting for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to succeed, it's hard to deny the times that it hasn't. The Prime Video adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Second Age of Middle-Earth has been repeatedly met with critical disappointment and has racked up a price tag higher than any other television project in history, so even Tolkien die-hards like myself could see a cause for its studio to back out after its already confirmed third season.

But according to a recent report, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is virtually guaranteed to complete its planned 5-season run, protected by none other than Jeff Bezos.

The report in question was an overview of the current state of Amazon's TV projects, as produced by Lesley Goldberg at The Ankler. According to the article, an unnamed source inside Prime Video explained to the outlet that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was "still under Bezos’ magical halo, [...]That’s protected for its run."

Getting specific here, the "run" in question consists of five seasons, which you may recall as being the plan for Prime Video's Middle-Earth foray since it began development. And like the One Ring itself, that plan is apparently nigh-impossible to break thanks to the will of another Dark Lord.

I mean, um, Leader of Industry.

But as you might recall Popverse reporting on last October, there's more than just the Iron Will of an Ancient Evil keeping The Rings of Power alive. Along with its 5-season schedule, Prime Video also began the process of making Rings of Power by agreeing to a $20M kill fee for every season they did not make, payable to the Tolkien Estate. And if $40M dollars isn't enough of a "magical halo" of its own, well, I don't know what is.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is streaming on Prime Video now.

Whether you're Shirefolk, Elven, Dwarven, or something else, there's a good reason to love Lord of the Rings. We do! With that in mind, we have a dragon's horde of goodies for you:

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
