Hellraiser returns at BOOM! Studios: Clive Barker’s classic horror reborn after 15 years

A new deal between Clive Barker and BOOM! Studios will see classic Hellraiser stories return to print in addition to brand new material based on the horror writer's work.

Clive Barker's Hellraiser looms large not just in horror cinema, but in comics and manga as well. (See: the character designs in Kentaro Miura's Berserk for evidence of the latter.) There is even more to be mined from the world of Clive Barker, though, and publisher BOOM! Studios is here to ignite this particular flame all over again.

After more than a decade, BOOM! Studios has re-acquired the comic book rights for Hellraiser. Bryce Carlson, deputy publisher for the company, said in a statement, "It was a devilishly good time when we first published HELLRAISER comics in 2011. And we couldn’t be more thrilled to see Pinhead return to BOOM! 15 years later for a second coming of absolute terror. We truly do have such sights to show you..."

I know what you must be wondering: what does Clive Barker feel about it? Well, you're in luck!

Barker released his own statement about the acquisition, saying, "I’m delighted to be partnering with BOOM! once again to create comics and graphic novels that will introduce both wild new projects, in addition to creating radical new visions of the kind of dark mythologies I’ve always been known for. There are a lot of doors waiting to be opened, and worlds of weird fantasy and horror waiting on the other side."

Although primarily known as a movie franchise, with 11 movies released in the series following its 1987 original, Hellraiser has quite a storied history in comics. Marvel's Epic Comics imprint held the license from 1989 through 1994 releasing multiple titles during that period (including 1992's Hellblazer Summer Special, for those who really wanted to see Pinhead on the beach); BOOM! Studios then worked with Barker on a new series of released from 2011 through 2015, before Barker's own Seraphim Incorporated released two volumes of the Hellraiser: Anthology in 2017.

According to the publisher "Fans can look forward to all new fiendish tales coming from BOOM! Studios in 2026, along with a BOOM! Direct Reserve Campaign collecting the entire out-of-print run of BOOM! Studios Hellraiser comics launching soon on Kickstarter."

Lots to look forward to in 2026!
