Imagine a world where Avengers didn't find Captain America on ice, but he woke up in the far-flung future

What if Captain America had woken up in the year 2099? That's the question at the core of What If...? Captain America #1

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Marvel's What If...? comics, the House of Ideas is launching a new mini-series called What If... Captain America from creators Marc Guggenheim and Ron Lim. As you probably extrapolated from the title, the mini-series will explore Captain America if things had just been slightly different at various points in his publication history.

What If...? Captain America #1 launches with a story called "What if..Captain America was revived in 2099?" which is a great question. The description for the issue reads, "Captain America's time during World War II ended with him frozen in ice, out of commission for decades. In the 616, he was revived and joined with fellow heroes The Avengers. But what if he missed the Heroic Age altogether? What evils would rise without the Sentinel of Liberty? Find out in this action-packed epic from Marc Guggenheim and X-Men 2099 legend, Ron Lim!"

Take a peek at the cover by Lucas Werneck and the first four pages of the issue below.

Lots to unpack here! Cap ditches his mid-century threads for a 2099 suit that even has Ghost Rider 2099 looking upon him in awe. It doesn't look like Steve needs a whole lot of time to, you know, process what the heck has happened to him before he's already sprinting into battle once again. Honestly, I wouldn't expect any different from him. He's the Star-Spangled Man With a Plan, after all, whether or not he knows what the internet is.

What If...? Captain America #1 will hit comic book shops on August 5, 2026. FOC is July 6, so let your comic book shop know you want a copy before then!
