After the success of One Piece on Netflix, it seems that the floodgates have opened for live-action anime adaptations. A potential Claymore adaptation was announced last year, while One Punch Man continues to bounce between writers and directors. However, it seems that Netflix is going forward with their live-action Gundam movie, with Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney and Street Fighter star Noah Centineo reporting to Australia for production this month.
Plot details for the upcoming Gundam film are still pretty scarce, and we still don’t know exactly who Sweeney or Centineo will be playing in the film. Bandai Filmworks, who have owned the Mobile Suit Gundam rights for years, are co-producers with Legendary Pictures for the Gundam movie for Netflix to release.
The full confirmed cast for Gundam is:
- Sydney Sweeney
- Noah Centineo
- Jackson White
- Shioli Kutsuna
- Nonso Anozie
- Michael Mando
- Javon “Wanna” Walton
- Oleksandr Rudynskyi
- Ida Brooke
- Gemma Chua-Tran
- Jason Isaacs
Mobile Suit Gundam remains one of the most enduring and iconic anime franchises on the planet. It has spawned multiple movies and series across multiple timelines, as well as countless toy lines for the aspiring collector to dump all their disposable income into. Mobile Suit Gundam has become the biggest name in the mecha genre, with plenty of action and storylines steeped in political messages that go far beyond the idea that giant robots fighting in space is cool (even if they totally are).
To say that the live-action Gundam film has a heavy burden of expectations for the legacy it is carrying is an almost hilarious understatement as production begins in Australia this month.
