Inside the Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss cast friendships: Brandon Rogers on besties, weekend parties, and improvised combat

Brandon Rogers opens up about his “found family” on Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, from Erika Henningsen to Richard Horvitz

For two shows set in the pits of actual Hell, working on Hazbin Hotel and/or Helluva Boss sure seems like a heavenly experience, especially when it comes to your costars. Remember how much love there was between Brandon Rogers and Alex Brightman at Emerald City Comic Con this year? Yeah, yeah - I know Alex later denied it, but you can't fool us, Beetlejuice.

Popverse recently had the chance to chat with star Rogers and get some insight about working on the series, but as we should've known, so much of our discussion was focused on the love that Rogers has for his fellow infernal minions, both as titular Helluva Boss Blitzo and as Hazbin Hotel's Katie Killjoy. To be clear, though, we got to talking about the subject because we asked if there was any one best friend Rogers had in the cast.

"Erika Henningsen," he said. "I mean, she's probably one of my favorites in that cast. She is a beautiful soul. I mean, she's just someone that you get excited to see when she walks into a room."

But because he couldn't stop there, and we certainly weren't going to stop him, Rogers got through a few more answers to our original question.

"Christian Borle is the only one who laughs at all of my jokes," raves Rogers. "Blake Roman and Joel Perez are the, you know, two people I get to fag out with. And Daphne Rubin-Vega is my - oh God, I don't want to start revealing what I do personally with these people, but we party. We party a lot."

(What does that mean? We didn't ask, loyal Popverse reader.)

"And I just have to say," Rogers continued, "We’re family, both casts. We see each other almost every weekend. We have a different text thread for the cast who are going to each and every weekend that, largely, Amir [Talai] orchestrates. [...] And yeah, I know that every [cast], every year, has to be like ‘Oh, we're like family, and I love the cast.’ And I know they have to say shit like that. But we really are. These people are probably the closest people to me besides my actual family."

An absolutely beautiful sentiment, Brandon. And before we leave you, reader, know that like so many of his fellow castmates, Rogers also has a special place in his heart for Moxxie actor and voice director Richard Horvitz.

"I used to think he was like a father to me," Rogers said, "And now I feel like he's like a brother. But sometimes, he feels like a son? The more I know him, the more childlike he becomes. He's just someone that's a really good improv artist. Richard Horvitz is highly underrated for his improv skills. I know we know him for his beautiful voice, but Richard and I get to be children at every con, because we have a panel, and we get to improvise. You know, we do physical comedy, we get into fights every convention. It's just like improvised combat. One of these days, we keep joking, one day we’ll actually make contact and punch each other's face."

Sounds like a brotherly relationship to me, Brandon.
