Invincible creator Robert Kirkman would love to do a Rex Splode special, except it would delay the next season of the Prime Video series even more
After a notoriously long wait between seasons one and two, the Invincible production team are worried about doing anything that might slow down future seasons of the hit show.

One of the biggest complaints everyone has had about the Invincible animated series has been the unbearably long wait between some of the seasons. Season one came out in 2021 while the second season was released in two batches between 2023 and 2024. Since then, the production crew has been focused on not allowing for quite so big of gaps between seasons, even if, as Invincible creator Robert Kirkman explains, it means not doing some of the cool spin-offs they’d like to do.
During an episode of the Heroes Reforged podcast, Robert Kirkman was asked about the possibility of another Invincible special, similar to the Atom Eve special we saw in 2023 that bridged the gap between seasons one and two. “We would love to do more specials,” Kirkman explained. “There’s definitely been a lot of talk about doing a Rex Splode special. We just haven’t been able to find the time to make it work.”
The problem comes down to the limited resources the crew has for making the Invincible series. “It would be the kind of thing where we’d have to pull part of the team off to do and, you know, it would derail what we’re trying to do with the season, so it’s something that I would love for us to be able to do at some point. There’s obviously a story there and I think it would be additive to the series and would be really cool but it’s something that we just haven’t been able to pull together just yet.”
While they purposefully put Rex in the teaser for season four in the hopes that fans would keep asking for the Rex Splode special to “drive them to do it,” the focus of Robert Kirkman and the rest of the Invincible production team remains on keeping the main seasons coming at a regular pace. For now, at least.
