"He's not really a villain. He's just a hungry guy": How the MTG Marvel planners convinced themselves Galactus isn't actually a villain

There is a reason why Galactus isn't a Villain in Magic: The Gathering x Marvel Super Heroes

Galactus may be absolutely terrifying in Marvel Comics and on-screen in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but in the end, he's not so different from you or me. He gets hungry! And he's got to satisfy that hunger somehow.

So when it came time to add Marvel's Biggest Purple Boy to Magic: The Gathering x Marvel Super Heroes, there was one hurdle that needed to be cleared by the set's development team: can we exactly classify Galactus as a villain, or something else entirely? It's a question that Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt had to address while working on the Fantastic Four's commander deck

"I had to convince several people in the building of why [Galactus] could go in [the FF commander deck] and not the villain deck - he's not really a villain. He's just a hungry guy," Holt said on the WeeklyMTG show.

Galactus appears in the form of the Galactus, Devourer of Worlds card in the Fantastic Four's commander deck. He's a colorless, 12/12 Elder Alien Legendary Creature, which suits exactly the kind of guy he is in Marvel Comics. Sure, he creates problems when he gets hungry and sets his sights on Earth, but we can't exactly blame the guy for being himself.

Anyways, Magic: The Gathering x Marvel Super Heroes is available now.
