How did Sir Crocodile get those scars in Netflix's One Piece? Joe Manganiello knows - because Oda told him

We doubt that the story behind those scars is going to be important in One Piece, but we also thought Buggy was gone forever, so we could be wrong.

We ask this question a lot, but do you know how Sir Crocodile from One Piece got his scars? The topic has never been broached in the manga or anime, but at least two people know how Mr. 0 got his iconic scars and lost his hand. One is Eiichiro Oda himself; the other is Joe Manganiello, the man playing Crocodile in the Netflix live-action adaptation of One Piece.

We’re still waiting to see how Joe Manganiello will bring Sir Crocodile to life in Netflix’s One Piece series, but the actor has said that he has had a long conversation about the character with Oda himself while filming season two. To help him get into the character of the leader of Baroque Works, he picked the One Piece creator’s brain about the hidden backstory of Crocodile.

“I had the opportunity to talk to Oda about my thoughts on where his scar came from, how the loss of the limb happened, and the hook was replaced,” Manganiello said during an interview this year. The topics the two discussed also included “his new choice of profession as casino owner and mob boss rather than pirate” and how Sir Crocodile got his Devil Fruit powers.

So what’s the story behind those scars? Neither Joe Manganiello nor Oda seem to be in a rush to tell us. Considering that it is never discussed in the manga, we’re doubtful that it will be important to the Netflix series. However, you never know what Oda is going to bring back later on, so it is best to keep our eyes on this one.
