Disney aims to revamp Buffy the Vampire Slayer (with help from Dolly Parton)

Is it time to finally use the stakes again?

After many failed attempts to reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it seems like a new series could be closer to actually getting made than we thought.

It's always felt like everyone had a hard time trying to move on from the iconic character and the show, and original series producer Dolly Parton says a new iteration of the series might be finally happening. While speaking to Business Insider, she confirmed the tentative reboot is far from dead: "They're still working on that... They're thinking about bringing it back and revamping it." Whether she's directly involved or not remains a mystery.

Quick story recap for those out of the loop: Back in 2009, Fran Rubel Kuzui (who also directed the 1992 movie and co-produced the original series as well as the spinoff Angel) was set to direct a new feature relaunch. Nine years later, in 2018, we learned about another attempt coming from original creator Joss Whedon and Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of SHIELD). News on that front have been conflicting over the years, with reports in 2022 saying it was "on pause" following social media backlash and confusion about whether it'd 'soft reboot' the story or start from scratch.

Meanwhile, and in spite of all these creative shakeups, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has managed to flourish over the years in other mediums, including comic books and even an Audible series. When asked about the production of such an important part of modern television, Parton said it was all about the people "who worked on it every day" relentlessly: "I have to give more people more credit on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' than me. A lot of people did so much sweat on that... That little show did great."

It comes as no surprise that Disney (who now owns 20th Century Fox's entire library) and the other powers that be are still interested in resurrecting the wildly successful IP, especially as they move into new territories with live-action shows such as Gargoyles. Thankfully, it also sounds like they're treating it very carefully instead of rushing forward with a half-baked pitch, so it may still be a while before we see notable process being made on this front.
